Assessment
This route is best suited for summer due to the fords you’ll cross, which are likely to be flooded during other seasons.
The route starts from the bike path near Portoverde, just a stone’s throw from the sea, and heads into the heart of the Valconca. The bike path provides an excellent warm-up for the climbs that lie ahead; in fact, it ascends about 100 meters in elevation over the first 18 km, passing near Morciano di Romagna.
At this point, you’ll tackle the first climb, gaining 365 meters in elevation toward San Teodoro, followed by a stretch of over 3 km of ups and downs, at the end of which you’ll face the final steep climb toward San Cerreto. The village is very small and picturesque, ideal for snapping a few photos of the castle that dominates the scene, along with its adjoining church.
Continue through the village and descend along a single-track trail through the woods for over 3 km; this section is very challenging in places, and it’s easy to fall if you don’t pay close attention.
Continuing on, you’ll tackle an uphill stretch toward Montefiore Conca to reach the foot of the castle, a great spot for a break.
From here, you can admire a splendid view of the Valconca and descend back into the valley along a very fun, roughly 3-km-long single track through the woods.
From the valley floor, the route crosses fords and trails until it brings you back to the Conca bike path heading toward the sea.
